If you are new to Her Wardrobe Markets, you may have come across us through the Mt Gravatt story rather than through one of our markets. If that is the case, we thought a little context might be useful.

We were based at Mt Gravatt Showgrounds for more than a decade.

Our weekly Sunday Mt Gravatt Fashion Markets have been a huge part of our story, and we built a community there that we are incredibly proud of.

We were deeply invested in the place, the people who came through our doors and the shoppers and stallholders who built the community as one of Brisbane's longest (if not the longest) runnign fashion famrekts.

The Mt Gravatt Showgrounds Trust undertook a master planning consultation process which, from our perspective, excluded not only our business but also our community of over 50,000 women from any kind of participation in the consultation process.

That led to a serious disagreement between us and the Trust.

We issued a formal notice seeking to resolve the matter, but did not receive any response. The situation then escalated in a way that became far more complicated than a disagreement about a market.

There are documents, correspondence, legal questions and two very different versions of events behind what ultimately appeared publicly as a result of the Showgrounds Trust and their PR team. It is not a particularly neat story, and it certainly isn't something that can be understood from a headline or a few social media comments.

Which brings us to our experience of opening TikTok for the first time since 2021 and being greeted with a comment that says:

“Hey! Wanna pay back those poor vendors????”

We see it time and again, that people appoint themselves Judge Judy and executioner (a little Simpsons wink for anyone who remembers the reference) in a stiutation they know absolutely zero about.

The one genuinely uncomplicated part of this story is that refunds have been issued, and we are unequivocal about that.

If you are a stallholder and believe you are still owed a refund, or you have another unresolved issue, please contact us directly at wardrobe.markets@gmail.com.

Our lines are open. We want to hear from you, and we are 100% committed to resolving genuine issues properly. We are not interested in anyone being left out of pocket.

What interests us more is what comes next.

After more than a decade of running markets, we have learned that human behaviour is endlessly fascinating. When people don't have the whole story, they naturally fill in the gaps. And, let's be honest, Brisbane does love a good gossip!

But perhaps this is a good moment to pause before deciding we know the whole story — and to get a little more curious about what actually happened.

On the whole, more and more people are feeling angry, and are looking for somewhere to put that anger.

When a complicated situation is presented in a simple way, it can become very easy to decide who the good people and bad people are.

But if you are interested in the truth, then you need to ask more questions. This involves politics at the local and state levels.

So a good place to start, would be to look at who helod the power. Look at who was included and who wasn't.

Ask why a community that had been using and supporting a venue for more than a decade was not meaningfully included in the master planning conversation?

Ask why attempts to resolve the disagreement directly did not result in get ANY response, legally required from the Mt Gravatt Showground Trust?

Right now we are focussed on doing what we have always done: honouring our customers, supporting our stallholders and building a big, kind circular fashion community.

Because our belief has not changed. The circular economy in fashion is abundant.

There should be more markets, more vintage events, more clothing swaps, more repair, more reuse and more ways for people to participate in slow and circular fashion.

There is room for everyone who wants to contribute. We don't see another market as competition; we see it as another opportunity to get more clothes circulating and more people thinking differently about how they consume fashion.

That is the future we want to be part of. That's why we are growing. And faster than ever before.

We are welcoming our community into Tugun, Indooroopilly, Red Hill, Newstead and the other locations we are developing.

If you are curious about us, come and experience what we actually do.

Come as a shopper. Come as a stallholder. Come to a pop-op. Talk to the people around you. Meet us in person. Follow the industry. See the circular economy happening in real life.

And if you have a genuine question, ask us.

We are choosing to spend our energy on the people who want to build something positive, rather than on keyboard warriors who have already decided what they believe and have no interest in hearing anything that might complicate their story.

We are more committed to our vision than ever.

You don't have to believe us.

Just be curious enough to come and see for yourself.
